ABUJA - The United Unity Environmental Rescue Organisation (UNERO), a Nigeria-based humanitarian and environmental non-profit organisation, has convened an International Peace and Unity Conference at Merit Award House, Maitama, Abuja, bringing together traditional rulers, security stakeholders and other distinguished personalities to advance peaceful coexistence, national cohesion and sustainable community development.

The conference provided a strategic platform for stakeholders to deliberate on the imperatives of peacebuilding, cultural diversity and humanitarian engagement, with speakers emphasising the need for collective responsibility in addressing societal divisions and strengthening the bonds of national unity.

Speaking with newsmen on the organisation’s vision, the Global Chairman and Convener of UNERO, Amb. Dr. Anagwu Ikechukwu Augustine, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to peacebuilding, environmental sustainability, humanitarian service and community development, describing these priorities as integral to its mission of promoting a peaceful and inclusive society.

He explained that UNERO would sustain programmes aimed at fostering unity, celebrating cultural diversity and encouraging constructive engagement among communities. According to him, the organisation’s activities also encompass environmental protection, sustainability awareness, road safety advocacy and humanitarian outreach designed to improve lives and promote responsible citizenship.

Speakers at the conference, in their respective contributions, underscored the imperative of safeguarding Nigeria’s unity through dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful conflict resolution. They called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, traditional authorities, security agencies and civil society organisations, noting that national stability requires a shared commitment to tolerance, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence.

Among the distinguished dignitaries at the event was His Royal Highness, Dr. Idris Musa, MFR, Sarkin Jiwa, FCT, Abuja, who charged participants to uphold the principles of peace and national unity while cautioning against actions and tendencies capable of fomenting discord, division and social disharmony. He emphasised the importance of collective solidarity in preserving the country’s stability and strengthening relationships across diverse communities.

Also in attendance was the Head of the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU), SP Awu Fidelis Jonah, who received the Peace Excellence Award at the conference. The recognition, according to the organisers, acknowledged his contributions to peace advocacy and public service, highlighting the importance of institutional responsibility and professional commitment to maintaining public confidence.

The award presentation further reinforced the conference’s emphasis on recognising individuals whose service and engagement align with the broader objectives of peace promotion and social cohesion. Participants also highlighted the significance of constructive partnerships between security institutions, traditional leadership and community-based organisations in addressing challenges that threaten peaceful coexistence.

The deliberations underscored the need to translate advocacy into practical action through sustained community engagement, environmental responsibility, public enlightenment and humanitarian interventions. Speakers maintained that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a collective undertaking requiring justice, mutual understanding, respect for differences and a willingness to resolve disagreements through dialogue.

The conference climaxed with the formal induction of distinguished personalities as Peace Ambassadors, in a move aimed at strengthening UNERO’s peacebuilding advocacy and expanding its network of advocates committed to national unity, humanitarian service and peaceful coexistence. The inductees are expected to champion the ideals of peace, promote intercultural understanding and support initiatives that foster harmonious relationships across communities, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to translating its advocacy into practical action for a more united, inclusive and sustainable society.

The conference concluded with a renewed call for individuals, institutions and community leaders to embrace the ideals of unity, tolerance and service to humanity. Through its peacebuilding initiatives and environmental advocacy, UNERO reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a more cohesive, inclusive and sustainable society in which diversity becomes a foundation for cooperation rather than a source of division.
