Larai Hassan Emerges FCT Coordinator of Humanitarian Leaders Network
Larai Binta Hassan, founder of the MotherHen Initiative (MHI), a non-governmental organisation committed to women's economic empowerment and girl-child education, has emerged as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Coordinator of the Humanitarian Leaders Network.
Her emergence was announced at the ongoing two-day Humanitarian Leaders Boot Camp and Awards 2026 in Abuja, which brought together humanitarian actors and stakeholders to examine strategies for strengthening institutional capacity, improving service delivery and promoting sustainable humanitarian interventions.
Through the MotherHen Initiative, Hassan has championed community-based interventions focused on improving the livelihoods of women and expanding educational opportunities for vulnerable girls, particularly in marginalised communities in Northern Nigeria.
In September 2022, the organisation held a women's empowerment session in Jos, Plateau State, where it identified and provided financial assistance to 50 marginalised women traders and food vendors operating with business capital of less than ₦10,000. The intervention was designed to support their businesses and strengthen their economic livelihoods.
The initiative has also promoted girl-child education as a pathway to reducing poverty and improving opportunities for vulnerable and orphaned girls, underscoring the importance of education in achieving sustainable community development.
Hassan's emergence as FCT Coordinator comes amid growing calls for stronger collaboration among humanitarian organisations, government institutions, civil society groups and community-based initiatives to address the needs of vulnerable populations.
The boot camp has provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss capacity building, leadership development and accountability, with emphasis on translating humanitarian commitments into practical interventions that deliver measurable results.
With her background in women's empowerment and community development, Hassan's new role presents an opportunity to advance collaboration among humanitarian actors and promote initiatives that improve the welfare of vulnerable communities across the FCT.
