OGWUS Unveils 2026 Football Cups, Moves to Uncover Niger Delta Talents

The OGWUS Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organization (OYECDO) has unveiled two major grassroots football tournaments for 2026, stepping up efforts to discover emerging football talents and create new opportunities for young players across the Niger Delta.

The tournaments — the 2026 Upata Unity Football Cup and the 2026 OGWUS Empowerment Cup, Abua/Odual — are expected to provide a competitive platform for football teams and promising players to showcase their abilities, gain exposure and pursue opportunities within the professional game.

According to OYECDO, the competitions are designed not only to promote grassroots football but also to use the sport as a vehicle for youth empowerment, community mobilisation, peacebuilding and social development. The organisation said the initiative would encourage young people to channel their energy into productive activities while developing discipline, teamwork, leadership and responsibility.

The 2026 tournaments build on the success of the 2025 Upata Unity Cup,
which attracted prominent personalities from the Nigerian football, political and traditional leadership circles. Former Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Austin Eguavoen, performed the ceremonial kick-off, while former Super Eagles star and Rivers United coach, Finidi George, also participated in the tournament.

The previous edition also drew the participation of Rivers State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Hon. Richard Ukpeni Ewoh, and the Paramount Ruler of Upata Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Nyudu Dr. Felix Enene Otuwarikpo, PhD, underscoring the growing profile of the grassroots football initiative.

Founder and sponsor of the tournaments, Eur Ing. Professor Chinedu Ogwus, said sustainable community development must begin with deliberate investment in young people, particularly through programmes capable of identifying their talents and creating pathways for them to succeed.

Professor Ogwus urged football teams and talented young players to register for the 2026 competitions, expressing confidence that the tournaments would provide a bigger platform for talent discovery and development. He said outstanding players could attract the attention of professional clubs, scouts and other football stakeholders, potentially opening doors to professional careers in Nigeria and abroad.

Beyond football development, OYECDO said the tournaments were also conceived as a response to social challenges affecting young people in parts of the Niger Delta, including unemployment, drug abuse, cultism, kidnapping, oil bunkering and youth restiveness.

The organisation maintained that sustained investment in grassroots sports could help reduce youth vulnerability to criminal activities by providing constructive platforms where young people can build friendships, develop their abilities and pursue productive ambitions.

Working in collaboration with the Upata Traditional Council,
OYECDO said the football initiative formed part of its wider commitment to youth empowerment and community transformation. The organisation called on corporate organisations, government institutions, philanthropists and development partners to support the tournaments.

OYECDO said the impact of previous editions had extended beyond the football pitch, with some players discovered through the competitions progressing into professional football structures, including Rivers United. With registration for the 2026 OGWUS Empowerment Cup underway, the organisation said it was looking forward to another successful edition capable of uncovering the next generation of football stars from the Niger Delta.
