CIISM Trains Managers on Strategic Leadership, Inducts New Fellows
ABUJA — The Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management (CIISM) on Thursday held its executive Strategic Master Class in Abuja, bringing together professionals and managers for intensive sessions on strategic leadership, effective management, strategy implementation and organisational performance.
The masterclass, themed “The Strategic Manager: Mastering Formulation, Implementation & Control,” was held at Murjanatu House, 1st Zambezi Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, with participants also joining virtually. The programme provided a platform for participants to examine contemporary approaches to strategy formulation, implementation, performance evaluation and organisational growth.
The sessions centred on four strategic principles: formulating strategy with clarity and data; implementing strategy through governance and accountability; evaluating performance and adapting continuously; and providing ethical leadership for sustainable growth. Participants were also exposed to practical strategic management lessons and Nigerian case studies involving leading organisations, including Dangote Group, BUA Group and MTN.
Among the resource persons were Mallam Nasir Abdulquadri, FCISM; Prof. Usman Lawan Yusufari, FCISM; Dr. Adelanke Oyintoke, DECISM, ACA, MNIM, FCE, ACIA, Registrar of CIISM; and Dr. Rotimi Mathew of Mentoring and Coaching Nigeria, Abuja.
Dr. Oyintoke, who took participants through “Mastering Formulation, Implementation and Control,” emphasised that strategy was a continuous process, stressing that organisations could not achieve sustainable success without timely, accurate and relevant information.
He noted that some strategies failed at the implementation stage, stressing that effective execution was as important as the quality of the strategy itself. He charged industry managers and organisational leaders to be deliberate, systematic and accountable in implementing strategic decisions, while noting that organisational structures could significantly determine institutional success.
The CIISM Registrar further stated that about 70 per cent of strategies fail or fall short of their intended objectives because of poor implementation, underscoring the need for disciplined execution, continuous monitoring and appropriate adaptation. He described information as a crucial resource for driving organisational objectives and supporting informed managerial decisions.
Also speaking, Mathew presented the “Rotimi Strategic Leadership Framework: Leading with Strategy,” which identifies key leadership imperatives including recognising reality and required results, outlining strategic direction, translating priorities into action, inspiring and integrating people, measuring performance and managing risk, as well as improving, innovating and institutionalising effective practices.
Mathew described leadership as a behaviour and a way of life, stressing that discipline was key to achieving results. He noted that vision was not static but could move, grow and expand, while charging participants to be deliberate about strategy and prepared for opposition that could arise when leaders initiate change.
Participants left the masterclass with a renewed resolve to move strategy from the boardroom to measurable action, applying the knowledge and practical skills acquired to strengthen leadership, improve organisational performance and drive sustainable results across their respective organisations.
The event also featured the induction of new Fellows of CIISM, with the institute conferring professional recognition on individuals whose contributions and professional engagements aligned with its objectives in information, strategic management, education and professional development. The programme underscored the institute’s emphasis on continuous professional development, strategic competence, ethical leadership and the capacity of professionals to translate strategy into sustainable organisational results.
