Building Systems, Accountability, Intentional Leadership Dominate Focus Africa Leaders Forum

ABUJA — Building stronger institutions, enforcing accountability and promoting results-driven leadership were among the major issues raised at the Focus Africa Leaders Forum 2026, where speakers and participants examined how Africa can translate its vast human and economic potential into measurable development outcomes.

Held on Saturday, September 26, at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, the high-level leadership gathering, themed “Beyond Potential: Leadership That Delivers,” convened policymakers, public-sector actors, entrepreneurs, professionals, innovators, development stakeholders and emerging leaders for a consequential discourse on how Africa can convert its human capital, economic resources and institutional capacity into enduring developmental outcomes.

Delivering the keynote address, Honourable Demian Igbokwe set the intellectual tone for the gathering with his presentation, “From Potential to Performance: Redefining African Leadership Success,” challenging African leaders to transcend the traditional celebration of possibilities and embrace a results-oriented leadership paradigm in which vision is subjected to execution, accountability and demonstrable impact.

Igbokwe argued, in substance, that the true currency of leadership is not the prestige of office or the visibility of political authority, but the capacity to translate mandates into transformative outcomes. His intervention placed a premium on strategic execution, institutional effectiveness and the ability of leadership to convert available opportunities into tangible improvements in the quality of life and prospects of citizens.

The governance conversation was further enriched by Aisha Abdullahi Adamu, who examined the critical intersection of governance, institutions and political will, stressing that sustainable development cannot be secured by policy pronouncements alone. She underscored the necessity of credible institutions, responsible governance architecture and the political resolve to carry reforms from conception to implementation.

Adamu’s intervention further illuminated the indispensable role of political will in overcoming the inertia that often frustrates institutional reform, arguing for leadership capable of making consequential decisions, enforcing accountability and sustaining policy direction beyond transient political interests. Her contribution reinforced the proposition that enduring development is ultimately a function of institutions that work and leadership willing to make them work.

Adding considerable intellectual depth to the leadership discourse, Honourable Zainab Buba Galadima presented “Leadership That Delivers: Lessons from High Performing African Institutions and Enterprises,” where she situated Africa’s leadership dilemma within the broader architecture of systems, accountability, competence and institutional continuity. She argued that the continent’s challenge is not necessarily an absence of capable individuals, but the inadequacy of systems capable of converting human capacity into sustainable institutional performance.

Galadima advocated an intentional and institution-centred leadership philosophy, stressing the need for competent teams, measurable standards, institutional memory, accountability and credible succession frameworks. She maintained that the enduring test of leadership is whether institutions remain stronger, more efficient and more resilient after the departure of the individual who occupied the leadership position.

The recognition segment of the forum provided a practical expression of its leadership philosophy, as Amb. (Dr.) Taliat Kola Talent, Chairman, Police Community Relations Committee, Metro Command, FCT Abuja, emerged Face of Focus Africa among 100 leaders recognised for leadership, community engagement and societal development. Speaking with Newsway Reporters, Talent described the recognition as a fresh responsibility, pledging greater diligence in his PCRC mandate and urging citizens to embrace the committee as an important interface for deepening trust, communication and collaborative security between the police and communities. He also emphasised respect for the rule of law as a fundamental condition for sustainable accountability.

Meanwhile, President of the Focus Africa Series, Ambassador Succex Ibe, expressed appreciation to participants for their robust participation in the September edition, describing their presence as a demonstration of collective commitment to the continent’s leadership renaissance. Ibe announced the organisation’s intention to institutionalise the gathering as a monthly leadership summit, designed to sustain intellectual engagement, deepen cross-sector dialogue and continually interrogate practical pathways towards the greater Africa envisioned by the Focus Africa movement.

The occasion also assumed a celebratory dimension with the cutting of a birthday cake in honour of Princess Edna DD Azura, National President, National Council for Women Societies. The symbolic celebration provided an opportunity for participants to honour her milestone while underscoring the broader ethos of recognising service, leadership and contributions to society.

The convergence of the keynote, governance interventions, institutional leadership discourse and recognition of impactful personalities ultimately reinforced the central philosophy of the September edition: that Africa’s future cannot be secured by potential alone, but by leadership capable of converting vision into execution, policy into outcomes and institutions into enduring instruments of public value.

 With the proposed monthly summit, Focus Africa Series is positioning the platform for a sustained conversation on accountable leadership, institutional transformation and the collective responsibility of Africans to build the continent they desire.
