Muslim World League Conference 2026: Sheikh Tajudeen Urges Religious Leaders to Unite Against Terrorism, Promote Peace

ABUJA — The Chief Imam of Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja, Sheikh Tajudeen Oyebanji, has called on religious leaders across Nigeria to close ranks and work collectively towards strengthening national unity, peace and security.

Oyebanji made the call while speaking with journalists at the ongoing Muslim World League International Conference 2026 in Abuja, where Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials and other stakeholders are deliberating on peace, security, religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.

Nigeria is hosting the major international gathering of the Muslim World League (MWL), bringing together prominent Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, governors, members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, political leaders and other stakeholders from Nigeria and beyond. The conference is being hosted under the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS Nigeria), led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau.

The gathering, holding at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, is focusing on peace, security, national unity, religious harmony, peaceful coexistence and the fight against extremism. The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, is participating alongside other distinguished personalities.

Oyebanji said although disagreements and conflicts might occur in any society, Nigerians must remain committed to dialogue, reconciliation and finding common ground in the interest of national peace, stability and development.

He urged Nigerians to rise above tribalism, nepotism, egocentric interests and other divisive tendencies capable of undermining national cohesion. “There is power in unity and togetherness. We must avoid tribalism, nepotism and egocentric sentiments. We must come together as a people to confront terrorism. We have the instruments to defeat them,” he said.

The Chief Imam also charged religious leaders to intensify the preaching of peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence in their various places of worship, stressing that clerics have a significant role to play in promoting understanding and unity among Nigerians.

Oyebanji cautioned against associating terrorism and violent conflicts with religion, insisting that the sanctity of human life remains fundamental to Islamic teachings. “No one should link conflict with religion. No religion accepts the destruction of human life. That is not the message of Islam,” he said.

He therefore called on religious leaders to use their platforms to promote dialogue, mutual understanding, tolerance and unity among Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious or political differences, stressing that collective action remains essential to confronting terrorism, extremism and other threats to national peace and stability.
