ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial Candidate for Oyo South, Hon. Bolanle Amina Sarumi Aliyu (BASA), has urged the Federal Government to prioritise citizen welfare and human capital development as key components of effective governance and national security.

BASA made the call while speaking during a panel session at a security and governance summit held at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, where stakeholders gathered to deliberate on inclusion, leadership, governance and national security.

She said the welfare of citizens should remain central to government policies, stressing that a secure and stable society requires investment in its people and improved social and economic conditions.

BASA particularly called on the Federal Government to improve the welfare and working conditions of security personnel, noting that those entrusted with protecting lives and property require adequate support, training and motivation to effectively discharge their duties.

She maintained that investment in human beings was essential to strengthening Nigeria’s resilience and security architecture.

In her earlier address, BASA said the Empower Her for Governance Fellowship, organised by Hon. Ebimoboere Alaibe Elezieanya under the Women in National Security & Non-Kinetic Counter-Terrorism Leadership Programme, was an important initiative for strengthening women’s participation in governance and national security.

The initiative, themed “From Community Resilience to National Security: Preparing Women to Prevent, Lead and Protect,” is aimed at equipping women with skills in security awareness, early warning, prevention of violent extremism, strategic communication, peacebuilding, governance, crisis preparedness and leadership resilience.

Speaking on women’s participation in governance, BASA stressed that women should not be regarded merely as victims of insecurity but as important stakeholders in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and national development.

She called for greater opportunities for women to participate in decision-making and leadership, saying inclusive governance would enable the country to maximise the talents and contributions of its citizens.

BASA urged stakeholders to move beyond discussions and translate commitments on inclusion, governance and security into practical policies capable of improving the lives of Nigerians.

She reiterated that people-centred leadership, citizen welfare and human capital investment were essential to building a safer, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
