ABUJA, Nigeria — Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has clinched the Outstanding Spokesperson Personality – Crisis Communicator award at the National Spokespersons Awards, in recognition of his contributions to effective public communication, crisis management and strategic information dissemination.
Waiya received the prestigious honour on August 13, 2026, at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, during the 4th Annual Economic Confidential Lecture and National Spokespersons Awards, held under the theme, “Anti-Corruption Reforms, Economic Stability and Effective Communication.”
The event brought together government officials, communication professionals, media practitioners and other stakeholders to examine the importance of effective communication in promoting transparency, public trust, accountability and economic stability. The occasion was chaired by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, while the keynote address was delivered by the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN.
The National Spokespersons Awards recognise outstanding spokespersons and communication professionals across Nigeria’s public and private sectors for excellence in strategic communication, crisis management, institutional transparency, reputation management and effective public engagement.
Ibrahim said prompt response, accountability and transparency remained key principles of the administration, stressing that effective communication was essential to ensuring that citizens were adequately informed and actively involved in governance.
He said Governor Abba Yusuf had consistently encouraged prompt responses to citizens’ calls, text messages and WhatsApp messages, explaining that whenever the Governor received complaints, requests or other issues from members of the public, he forwarded them to the appropriate authorities for immediate attention and necessary action.
According to Waiya, the approach had strengthened citizens’ participation and engagement in governance, adding that his ministry also prioritised responding to calls, messages and complaints from members of the public to ensure that every case received the necessary attention.
“Governance is about citizens’ participation and engagement, and that is what we do. Democratic governance is about citizens’ participation,” he said.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs was working towards strengthening the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act in Kano State, to enable citizens and media practitioners to have greater access to vital government information.
He said the initiative was part of the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and open governance, stressing that timely access to credible information would enable citizens to understand government policies, participate meaningfully in governance and hold public institutions accountable.
Waiya said effective information management went beyond disseminating government policies, explaining that it also involved creating channels through which citizens could communicate their concerns and receive appropriate responses from relevant authorities.
He added that maintaining open and responsive communication between government and the people was critical to building public trust, strengthening accountability and ensuring that government remained responsive to the needs and concerns of citizens.
The Commissioner’s recognition as Outstanding Spokesperson Personality – Crisis Communicator further places him among communication professionals recognised for demonstrating professionalism, responsiveness and strategic leadership in public-sector information management and crisis communication.
