Woman 👠 rise

CHAPTER THREE

WOMENRISE ...

From Selfishness to Selflessness

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." — Philippians 2:3 (ESV

The journey from selfishness to selflessness is one of the most profound transformations God can accomplish in the life of a woman. It is a journey of spiritual growth, personal maturity, and leadership development that begins with a changed heart and results in a changed life. Every woman whom God uses significantly must first learn to move beyond self-centered living and embrace a life dedicated to serving Him and blessing others. Before God entrusts a woman with influence, He first develops within her the character to steward that influence with humility, wisdom, and compassion.

Selfishness is the natural tendency to place personal interests, desires, and ambitions above the needs of others and above the will of God. It focuses on personal comfort, recognition, success, and gain, often without considering how those pursuits affect other people. While the world encourages individuals to prioritize themselves above everything else, the Kingdom of God teaches a different principle. Jesus consistently demonstrated that true greatness is found not in self-exaltation but in selfless service. He taught His disciples that whoever desires to be great must first become a servant, establishing a standard of leadership that continues to challenge believers today.

Selfishness often manifests itself in subtle ways. It may appear as jealousy when another woman succeeds, pride that refuses correction, an unwillingness to forgive, the desire for constant recognition, or the habit of comparing oneself with others. Sometimes it is seen in unhealthy competition, manipulation, greed, or indifference toward the struggles of those around us. These attitudes gradually weaken relationships, create division, hinder spiritual growth, and prevent women from reaching their full God-given potential. A heart controlled by selfish ambition finds it difficult to celebrate the success of others because it constantly measures worth through comparison rather than through God's purpose.

The transformation from selfishness to selflessness begins when a woman surrenders her heart completely to God. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, who renews the mind, purifies motives, and reshapes priorities. Instead of asking, "What can I gain?" she begins to ask, "How can I glorify God and serve others?" Her focus shifts from building her own reputation to advancing God's Kingdom. She becomes less concerned about receiving recognition and more committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around her.

This transformation requires humility, one of the defining characteristics of Christlike leadership. Humility enables a woman to acknowledge that every gift, opportunity, and achievement comes from God. It frees her from the burden of proving herself and allows her to celebrate the accomplishments of others without jealousy or insecurity. A humble woman recognizes that leadership is not about superiority but about responsibility. She understands that influence is a sacred trust given by God to bless others rather than to elevate herself.

Moving from selfishness to selflessness also requires the willingness to forgive, to show compassion, and to give generously. It involves choosing love over resentment, service over status, and collaboration over competition. A selfless woman is intentional about encouraging others, mentoring younger women, supporting worthy causes, and using her gifts to strengthen her family, church, workplace, and community. She realizes that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the potential to change someone's life and bring glory to God.

Jesus Christ remains the perfect example of this transformation. Although He possessed all authority and power, He chose the path of humility and sacrifice. He touched the untouchable, welcomed the rejected, healed the broken, and ultimately laid down His life for the salvation of humanity. His life demonstrates that the highest expression of leadership is sacrificial love. He did not seek earthly honor but fulfilled His Father's will through complete obedience and selfless service. Every Christian woman who desires to lead effectively must continually look to Christ as the ultimate model of servant leadership.

The Bible also presents women whose lives illustrate this journey. Ruth left her homeland to remain loyal to Naomi, placing faithfulness above personal convenience. Esther risked her life to save her people, choosing courage over comfort. Dorcas devoted herself to serving widows and the poor, leaving behind a legacy of compassion that moved an entire community. These women did not pursue greatness for themselves; they pursued God's purpose, and in doing so, they became great in His sight.

In every sphere of life, the principles of selflessness produce extraordinary influence. In the family, a selfless woman nurtures love, unity, and stability. In the Church, she serves faithfully, strengthens others, and advances the work of God's Kingdom. In business, she leads with integrity, fairness, and compassion, creating opportunities for others to succeed. In politics and public service, she promotes justice, accountability, and the common good rather than personal ambition. Within society, she becomes a source of hope, peace, and transformation, using her gifts to address the needs of her community.

The journey from selfishness to selflessness is not completed in a single moment but through daily choices. Each decision to forgive instead of retaliate, to encourage instead of criticize, to give instead of withhold, and to serve instead of seeking recognition shapes the character of a Kingdom woman. These seemingly ordinary decisions gradually produce extraordinary influence, allowing God to use one life to impact countless others.

The call of WOMENRISE is therefore a call to embrace this life-changing transformation. It is an invitation for every woman to exchange selfish ambition for Kingdom purpose, pride for humility, competition for collaboration, and personal gain for sacrificial service. As women walk this path, they become leaders after God's own heart—women who inspire faith, strengthen families, build communities, influence nations, and leave a legacy that reflects the love and character of Jesus Christ. When a woman moves from selfishness to selflessness, she not only discovers the fullness of God's purpose for her own life but also becomes a blessing through whom generations are transformed.

Understanding Selfishness

Selfishness is one of humanity's oldest struggles. From the Garden of Eden, where Eve was tempted to satisfy personal desire above obedience to God, selfishness has continued to influence human behavior. It places personal interests above God's will and the well-being of others. It causes individuals to seek recognition instead of righteousness, position instead of purpose, and applause instead of obedience.

In today's world, selfishness is often celebrated as self-promotion, personal branding, and relentless competition. Society encourages people to climb over others to achieve success, to seek influence without responsibility, and to accumulate without giving. Yet God's Kingdom operates by an entirely different standard. In His Kingdom, greatness belongs to those who serve.

Selfishness does not always appear in obvious ways. It may hide behind pride, resentment, jealousy, gossip, manipulation, or the unwillingness to forgive. Sometimes it reveals itself in the refusal to help others, the inability to celebrate another woman's success, or the constant desire to be the center of attention.

A selfish heart gradually isolates itself from meaningful relationships. It creates division within families, churches, organizations, and communities. Where selfishness thrives, unity suffers. Trust is broken, relationships become strained, and opportunities for collective growth are lost.

A woman who desires to rise must first confront selfishness within her own heart. True transformation begins not by changing external behavior but by allowing God to renew the inner person.

Illustration

Imagine two gardens planted side by side. One gardener waters only the flowers closest to her house, allowing the rest of the garden to wither. The second gardener cares for every section equally. Over time, the second garden flourishes with beauty and abundance, while the first becomes uneven and neglected. Selfishness produces isolated beauty; selflessness creates flourishing communities.

The Cost of Selfishness

Every selfish decision carries consequences that extend beyond the individual making it. Selfishness damages trust, weakens leadership, and destroys unity. Many families have experienced conflict because individuals insisted on their own way rather than seeking peace. Many friendships have ended because pride replaced humility. Many ministries have declined because personal ambition overshadowed God's purpose.

King Saul provides a powerful biblical example. His insecurity and selfish ambition led him to envy David. Rather than celebrating David's victories, Saul became consumed by jealousy, eventually losing both his kingdom and his peace.

In contrast, Jonathan demonstrated remarkable selflessness. Though he had every reason to compete with David for the throne, he chose friendship over rivalry and God's purpose over personal ambition.

Modern Illustration

A successful businesswoman noticed a younger colleague with exceptional potential. Instead of mentoring her, she viewed her as competition and deliberately withheld opportunities for growth. Eventually, both the organization and the businesswoman suffered because leadership built on insecurity cannot produce lasting success.

Years later, another leader chose a different path. She invested her knowledge, opened doors for younger women, and celebrated their achievements. Her influence multiplied because she understood that leadership is measured not by how many people serve you but by how many people you empower.

Reflection

Who have you encouraged recently? Is there someone whose growth you have unintentionally resisted because of comparison or insecurity?

BIBLICAL WOMEN WHO ROSE THROUGH SELFLESSNESS

The Scriptures are filled with remarkable women whose lives demonstrate that true greatness is born out of selflessness. They were not remembered because they sought power, recognition, or personal gain, but because they willingly surrendered their own interests to fulfill God's purpose and serve others. Their stories continue to inspire women across generations, proving that God always honors a heart of humility, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.

Among these extraordinary women is Ruth, whose life stands as a timeless testimony of loyalty and sacrificial love. Following the death of her husband, Ruth was faced with a difficult choice. She could have returned to her own family and homeland to rebuild her life, as Naomi had encouraged her to do. Instead, she chose a path of selfless devotion. Refusing to abandon her grieving mother-in-law, Ruth declared, "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people shall be my people and your God my God" (Ruth 1:16). Those words were not merely an emotional promise; they were a covenant of faithfulness that demonstrated extraordinary commitment.

Ruth placed Naomi's welfare above her own comfort and security. She left behind her culture, her familiar surroundings, and any certainty about her future because she believed that love required sacrifice. God honored her faithfulness beyond anything she could have imagined. He directed her steps to Boaz, who became her husband, and through that union Ruth became the great-grandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Her story teaches that God never overlooks quiet acts of faithfulness. What may appear to be ordinary obedience often becomes the foundation for extraordinary destiny. Every woman who chooses loyalty over convenience positions herself for divine favor and lasting significance.

Another outstanding example of selfless leadership is Queen Esther, a woman whom God strategically placed in a position of influence for the salvation of an entire nation. Esther enjoyed the privileges of royalty, living in the comfort and security of the Persian palace. She could have remained silent when Haman plotted the destruction of the Jewish people, protecting her own position while others suffered. Instead, she chose courage over comfort and responsibility over personal safety.

When challenged by Mordecai to act, Esther recognized that leadership always demands sacrifice. She called her people to prayer and fasting before making the courageous decision to approach the king without invitation—a decision that could have cost her life. Her declaration, "If I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16), reflects the heart of a woman who valued God's purpose more than personal preservation. Esther understood that influence is not a privilege to be enjoyed but a responsibility to be stewarded. Through her obedience and courage, God used her to preserve the Jewish nation from destruction. Her life reminds every woman that God often places His daughters in strategic positions "for such a time as this." Whether in government, business, education, ministry, or the family, leadership is a divine assignment to serve others rather than ourselves.

The life of Dorcas, also known as Tabitha, presents another beautiful picture of selflessness expressed through practical acts of kindness. Unlike queens or national leaders, Dorcas became known for simple but consistent acts of compassion. The Bible describes her in Acts 9:36 as "full of good works and charitable deeds." She devoted herself to serving widows, making garments for those in need, and quietly meeting practical needs within her community. She did not seek public recognition or applause. Instead, she allowed her works of love to speak for her.

When Dorcas died, the impact of her life became unmistakably evident. The widows she had served gathered around her body, weeping and showing Peter the garments she had lovingly made for them. Their tears testified to a life poured out in service to others. Moved by faith and compassion, Peter prayed, and God miraculously restored Dorcas to life. This remarkable event demonstrates that God values lives devoted to serving others. Dorcas teaches us that selflessness is not measured by titles or public platforms but by the lives we touch through consistent acts of love and generosity. A woman whose hands are committed to serving people will always leave footprints that time cannot erase.

These women differed in background, social status, and life experiences, yet they shared one defining characteristic—they chose God's purpose above personal comfort. Ruth demonstrated loyalty, Esther displayed courageous leadership, and Dorcas exemplified compassionate service. Their lives reveal that selflessness is not weakness but strength under God's direction. They remind us that when women surrender themselves to God's purposes, they become instruments through whom families are restored, communities are transformed, nations are influenced, and future generations are blessed.

The call of WOMENRISE is the same today. God is still looking for women who will love like Ruth, lead like Esther, and serve like Dorcas. These women understood that the highest form of leadership is not found in being served but in serving others. Their examples challenge every woman to rise above selfish ambition and embrace a life of humility, courage, compassion, and sacrificial love. As women choose the path of selflessness, they not only fulfill God's purpose for their own lives but also become a blessing to everyone within their sphere of influence.
