CPAN Chairman, Maureen Nwafor, Calls for Stronger Community-Clinical Pharmacy Collaboration at ACPN's 45th Annual Conference

ABUJA — The National Chairman of the Clinical Pharmacists Association of Nigeria (CPAN), Dr. Maureen Nwafor, has called for stronger collaboration between community and clinical pharmacists, saying a united pharmacy profession is critical to improving patient care and strengthening Nigeria's healthcare system.

Nwafor made the call in a goodwill message at the 45th Annual International Scientific Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), themed "From Local Pharmacy Practice to Global Impact: Managing Complex Political Systems," held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.

 Among the esteemed guests at the conference were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who led the Federal Government delegation; the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro; the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji; and the Niger State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana.

Speaking on behalf of the National Executive Committee and the entire membership of CPAN, Nwafor congratulated the ACPN for successfully hosting its 45th Annual International Scientific Conference, describing the theme as visionary and timely. She said it reflects the changing realities of pharmacy practice and challenges professionals to expand their influence beyond traditional roles by engaging in policy development and navigating complex healthcare systems.

According to her, pharmacists must increasingly contribute to health sector reforms by participating in policy discussions and strengthening professional collaboration. She commended the ACPN for providing a platform that encourages innovation, knowledge sharing, and practical solutions capable of advancing pharmacy practice and improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

Nwafor described community pharmacists as the most accessible healthcare professionals in the country, serving as the first point of contact for millions of Nigerians seeking medical advice and pharmaceutical services. She noted that their contributions to patient-centred care, medication management, disease prevention, health promotion, and public health interventions remain indispensable to achieving better health outcomes.

The CPAN Chairman stressed that stronger collaboration between community pharmacists and clinical pharmacists would bridge the gap between primary healthcare and specialised clinical services. She explained that closer cooperation would promote continuity of care, improve medication safety, enhance treatment outcomes, and ensure that patients receive comprehensive pharmaceutical care at every level of the healthcare system.

She reaffirmed CPAN's commitment to working closely with ACPN in advancing holistic, patient-centred pharmacy practice, stating that both associations share a common vision of elevating professional standards and expanding access to quality pharmaceutical services. She added that unity within the profession would position Nigerian pharmacists to make greater contributions to healthcare both nationally and globally.

Nwafor also expressed appreciation for the invitation to serve as Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony, describing the gesture as a reflection of the unity, mutual respect, and collaboration that define the pharmacy profession. She congratulated ACPN National Chairman, Pharm. Ambrose Igwekamma Ezeh, the National Executive Council, the Conference Planning Committee led by Pharm. Chidi Dozie, and the entire membership of the association for their unwavering commitment to professional excellence and the continued advancement of community pharmacy practice.

The conference attracted thousands of pharmacists, healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical industry executives, researchers, policymakers, development partners, and government officials. Participants deliberated on strategies for strengthening community pharmacy practice, expanding access to quality medicines, promoting healthcare innovation, and positioning Nigeria's pharmaceutical sector for greater regional and global competitiveness through effective collaboration and policy implementation.
