AIHS 2026: Kano Commissioner Advocates Collaborative Approach to Affordable Housing Delivery
By Genesis Ogiri
ABUJA – The Kano State Commissioner for Housing Development, Arc. Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu, has called for a collaborative approach among governments, financial institutions, developers, investors, and other stakeholders to address the housing deficit and expand access to affordable housing for low-income earners in Nigeria and across Africa.
Speaking with Newsway reporters at the ongoing Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) 2026 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the Commissioner said affordable housing remains one of the greatest challenges facing many African countries and requires coordinated action from both the public and private sectors.
Arc. Adamu disclosed that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda by implementing policies and programmes aimed at increasing access to decent and affordable housing for the people of Kano State.
According to him, governments alone cannot bridge the enormous housing gap, stressing that stronger Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are essential to mobilise investment, accelerate housing development, and make homeownership more accessible, particularly for low-income families.
"He noted that the Federal Government, state governments, private developers, financial institutions, and development partners all have critical roles to play in creating a sustainable housing ecosystem capable of meeting the growing demand for affordable homes.
The Commissioner also highlighted the importance of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria in providing accessible mortgage financing, saying affordable housing can only become a reality when prospective homeowners have access to flexible and affordable mortgage facilities.
He revealed that the Kano State Government is working assiduously on several housing initiatives and financing packages designed to widen the window of accessibility to decent and affordable housing for the general public.
"We are committed to developing practical solutions that will enable more citizens, especially low-income earners, to own decent homes. This requires synergy among all stakeholders, including government institutions, private investors, developers, and mortgage finance institutions," he said.
Arc. Adamu further described the Africa International Housing Show as an important platform for policymakers, housing professionals, investors, and development partners to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and build partnerships that will transform the housing sector across Africa.
He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration, innovative financing models, and supportive government policies would significantly reduce the housing deficit, stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and improve the living standards of millions of Nigerians.
