ACPN FCT Chairman: Pharmacists Must Become Policy Influencers, Community Leaders — Maduekwe

ABUJA — The Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Branch, Pharm. Maduekwe Chimaeze Precious, FPSN, has called on pharmacists across the country to become active policy influencers, strategic community leaders, and advocates for healthcare reforms, saying the profession must play a more prominent role in shaping Nigeria's health policies and improving healthcare delivery.

Maduekwe made the call while delivering his welcome address at the 45th Annual International Scientific Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking Pharmacy Week 2026. The conference attracted top government officials and healthcare stakeholders, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro; the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji; and the Niger State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, alongside heads of regulatory agencies, development partners, captains of industry, international delegates, and pharmacy professionals.

Welcoming participants from across Nigeria and beyond, the ACPN FCT Chairman expressed appreciation for their commitment to advancing community pharmacy practice, describing the annual conference as a strategic platform for promoting innovation, collaboration, and professional excellence within the healthcare sector.

Speaking on the conference theme, "From Local Pharmacy Practice to Global Impact: Managing Complex Political Systems," Maduekwe said the future of pharmacy extends beyond clinical practice, stressing that political, economic, regulatory, and governance systems increasingly determine the quality and accessibility of healthcare services.

He noted that community pharmacists remain the most accessible healthcare professionals in Nigeria, serving as the first point of contact for millions of citizens seeking medicines, pharmaceutical care, and health advice. He, however, stressed that pharmacists must become active participants in healthcare policy discussions, effective advocates, strategic community leaders, and influencers capable of shaping reforms that improve access, affordability, and the quality of medicines.

According to him, the profession must strengthen engagement with policymakers, government institutions, regulators, and other stakeholders, emphasizing that pharmacists have a critical role to play in developing sustainable healthcare policies capable of transforming Nigeria's health sector.

Maduekwe described the conference as an opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge, share global best practices, explore emerging trends, and build partnerships that will strengthen community pharmacy practice and position Nigerian pharmacists for greater regional and global relevance.

He commended the keynote speakers, resource persons, government officials, development partners, and industry leaders for supporting the conference, while encouraging delegates to actively participate in the scientific sessions and return to their communities with innovative ideas and renewed determination to improve healthcare delivery.

The ACPN FCT Chairman reaffirmed the association's commitment to building a stronger, more resilient, and globally competitive community pharmacy sector driven by visionary leadership, strategic advocacy, innovation, and professional excellence, expressing confidence that united pharmacists would continue to transform local practice into global impact while contributing significantly to improved health outcomes and national development.
