ABUJA — In a grand ceremony underscoring the strategic importance of grassroots governance in Nigeria's democratic architecture, Rootswatch Magazine honoured distinguished local government chairmen drawn from the nation's six geopolitical zones and unveiled a special publication chronicling their leadership accomplishments.

The event, held at the National Merit House, Maitama, Abuja, attracted an impressive gathering of government officials, political leaders, policymakers, development partners, traditional rulers, and stakeholders committed to strengthening local governance and democratic accountability.

Delivering the welcome address, the Editor-in-Chief and National Coordinator of Rootswatch Magazine, Prince Bayode Ojo, called for far-reaching reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria's governance and security institutions.

"He advocated the establishment of state police, arguing that the nation's evolving security realities demand a more decentralized and responsive policing framework capable of addressing contemporary threats at the community level. According to him, effective security governance requires institutional structures that are closer to the people and better positioned to harness local intelligence.

Prince Ojo observed that the persistent challenges of banditry, kidnapping, communal unrest, and other forms of criminality have reinforced the urgency of rethinking Nigeria's security architecture. He contended that state policing, when anchored on robust constitutional safeguards and accountability mechanisms, would enhance operational efficiency, improve response capabilities, and deepen collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies. He further stressed that sustainable development cannot flourish in an atmosphere of insecurity and social instability.

The Distinguished Local Government Chairmen Merit Award was established to recognize local government administrators whose leadership has demonstrated administrative excellence, prudent resource management, and impactful grassroots development. According to the organizer, the selection process was rigorous and merit-based, aimed at celebrating public servants whose contributions have advanced socio-economic progress across their respective local government areas.

The organizer noted that local governments remain the closest tier of government to the people and a critical vehicle for delivering democratic dividends. He stated that the award initiative seeks not only to honour excellence but also to promote a culture of accountability, innovation, and service-driven leadership within Nigeria's local government system.

The honoured chairmen were commended for implementing impactful policies and programmes that have enhanced healthcare delivery, expanded educational opportunities, improved rural infrastructure, strengthened agricultural productivity, promoted youth and women empowerment, and stimulated local economic development. Their achievements, stakeholders observed, demonstrate the pivotal role of local government leadership in fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development.

A major highlight of the occasion was the presentation of awards and special recognition packages to the recipients. In acknowledgment of their outstanding service and measurable developmental impact, several awardees received prizes, including vehicles and power-generating equipment. The gesture was widely applauded as a symbolic affirmation of the value of excellence, innovation, and results-driven leadership in public office.

The event concluded with goodwill messages, strategic engagements among stakeholders, and renewed calls for policies that deepen democratic governance and accelerate grassroots development. Participants described the ceremony as a fitting recognition of public servants whose leadership continues to positively impact millions of Nigerians.

Beyond the awards and accolades, the gathering reinforced the growing consensus that effective local governance remains indispensable to national cohesion, economic advancement, and the realization of Nigeria's broader development aspirations.
