ENUGU — Political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections assumed a significant dimension on Tuesday as a group of concerned voters and stakeholders from Enugu North/South Federal Constituency submitted a formal petition to the National Chairman and National Working Committee (NWC) of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), expressing serious reservations over the aspiration of Hon. Nelson Maduka Arum to contest for the House of Representatives seat under the party's platform.

The petitioners, led by Mr. Onyekwere Onu, and supported by Mr. Osim Joshua (Enugu South LGA), Ifeoma Ukwu (Enugu South LGA), George Uche Nnamani (Enugu South LGA), Paschal Mgbemene (Enugu North LGA), and Nneka Janet Ahanonu (Enugu North LGA), expressed concerns over what they described as issues relating to political loyalty, public perception, leadership disposition, and the overall electoral implications of the aspirant's emergence as the party's candidate.

The petition, dated June 2, 2026, urged the NDC leadership to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the aspirant's political antecedents, party loyalty, public perception, and overall suitability for elective office before considering him for the party's ticket. According to the petitioners, such due diligence is imperative to safeguard the integrity, credibility, and electoral viability of the party within the constituency.

According to the petition, stakeholders have raised concerns regarding Hon. Arum's previous political affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC) prior to his alignment with the NDC. The petitioners contended that questions continue to resonate among sections of the party's grassroots base concerning the depth of his commitment to the ideological principles, vision, and long-term objectives of the NDC. They consequently urged the party leadership to critically evaluate these concerns in the broader interest of party cohesion, internal stability, and voter confidence.

The petition further referenced concerns surrounding the aspirant's political and business relationships with the current administration in Enugu State. Specifically, the petitioners alleged that his involvement in the execution of a major government  contract has generated debate among party faithful regarding issues of political independence and allegiance.

They argued that such relationships may create perceptions capable of undermining confidence in his commitment to advancing the programmes and strategic direction of the NDC. Consequently, they called on the National Working Committee to examine the matter with transparency, objectivity, and political sensitivity.

Furthermore, the petition cited reports and allegations relating to Hon. Arum's public conduct and interactions with public officials. The petitioners urged the party to independently verify all publicly available information relating to such allegations before arriving at any decision concerning his candidacy. They maintained that the NDC, as a party seeking to deepen democratic values and responsible governance, must ensure that its candidates embody discipline, emotional maturity, respect for constituted authority, and exemplary leadership conduct.

The concerned voters warned that failure to adequately interrogate the issues raised could erode confidence among party members and stakeholders within Enugu North/South Federal Constituency. They emphasized that the outcome of the party's nomination process would have far-reaching implications for its unity, grassroots mobilization efforts, and electoral fortunes in the constituency. Accordingly, they called on the NWC to engage extensively with party stakeholders and conduct a thorough evaluation of all concerns before making any final determination regarding the party's candidate for the 2027 elections.

As of the time of filing this report, Hon. Nelson Maduka Arum had not publicly responded to the allegations and concerns contained in the petition. Similarly, the National Working Committee of the NDC had not issued an official statement regarding the matter. The allegations and assertions contained in the petition remain the position of the petitioners and have not been independently verified.
