Enugu West 2027: Hon. Chukwu Zerubabbel Jonas Picks NDC Senatorial Form, Says Senate Is Platform for National Reengineering

Abuja — In a defining political step ahead of the 2027 general elections, Honourable Chukwu Zerubabbel Jonas has officially obtained the nomination and expression of interest form under the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest for the Enugu West Senatorial District seat, signalling what he describes as a mission to restore trust, legislative integrity, and governance equilibrium in Nigeria’s democratic space.

Speaking with newsmen at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja shortly after securing the form, Jonas positioned his aspiration within the broader context of Nigeria’s evolving democratic demands, arguing that the country’s political ecosystem is in urgent need of credible actors capable of rebuilding institutional confidence and strengthening state capacity.

According to him, the current national reality demands a recalibration of leadership values anchored on trust, accountability, and developmental patriotism.

“Today, Nigeria’s politics needs individuals who can be trusted—people with the capacity to build the nation and reinforce institutional credibility. That is why I have stepped forward to represent my people at the Red Chamber, to advance policy frameworks that will serve their collective interest,” he stated.

Zerubabbel emphasized that his decision to pursue a senatorial mandate was deliberate and strategic, noting that the upper chamber of the National Assembly remains a critical engine room for legislative engineering, oversight functionality, and national policy formulation.

He maintained that, if elected, he would champion robust legislative interventions aimed at strengthening ministries, departments, and agencies, while ensuring strict oversight over the executive arm to guarantee balance, accountability, and effective governance delivery.

“The Senate represents a higher pedestal of lawmaking and national arbitration. We will craft legislation that compels ministries and agencies to function optimally, while also reinforcing oversight mechanisms that ensure checks and balances across the executive structure. That is fundamental to rebuilding a viable state,” he explained.

The senatorial hopeful further lamented what he described as prolonged political and developmental marginalization of Enugu West Senatorial District, pledging to reposition the region within the national policy and development architecture through effective representation and strategic legislative advocacy.

He vowed to elevate his constituents from the periphery of national discourse to the centre of governance attention, insisting that the era of political neglect must give way to inclusive development and equitable federal engagement.

“I am determined to bring my people into national prominence. For too long, they have been relegated and overlooked. That narrative must change,” he said.

Jonas also delivered a strong normative stance on political ethics, stressing that public office must be redefined as a platform for legacy building rather than personal accumulation, warning against the continued abuse of public resources for private enrichment.

He declared that the era of fiscal recklessness and diversion of public funds must be replaced with a culture of transparency, institutional discipline, and public trust restoration.

“Politics and representation are not instruments of private enrichment; they are vehicles for legacy, accountability, and nation-building. The era of diverting public funds for personal gain must end. We must institutionalize honesty, rebuild trust, and restore dignity in governance,” he added.

He called on party stakeholders, political actors, and constituents across Enugu West to align with his aspiration, assuring that his legislative agenda would prioritize institutional reform, governance efficiency, and sustainable socio-economic transformation.
