Akwunda-Born Police Officer, Joshua Idoko Adekpe, Dies
AKWUNDA — The Akwunda community is in mourning following the death of Police Officer Joshua Idoko Adekpe, whose passing has been medically linked to Lassa fever.
According to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, the fever associated with Lassa virus infection typically lasts for approximately few days before leading to critical complications. Hospital authorities confirmed that, due to the infectious nature of the illness, the remains must be buried immediately in accordance with public health protocols to prevent further spread. The family complied with the directive in the interest of public safety.
Until his death, Officer Adekpe had recently been promoted to head a division at Itakpa-Ito — a development widely regarded as recognition of his discipline, prudence, and unwavering commitment to duty. Colleagues described him as firm yet fair, courageous yet measured under pressure. His promotion reflected institutional confidence in his leadership and professional integrity.
Speaking with our correspondent, his cousin, Jerry Anthony, who accompanied him during his hospitalization, revealed that family members were not granted access to see Officer Adekpe. “We were not allowed near him. It was heartbreaking,” he said, describing the situation as deeply painful and frustrating for relatives who had hoped to offer comfort during his final days.
An indigene of Akwunda, the late officer was admired not only for his service in uniform but also for his humility and respect for community values. Security sources noted that he approached assignments with diligence and accountability, serving as a mentor to junior officers and a dependable figure to superiors and civilians alike.
During a condolence telephone conversation initiated by Newsway Africa, the deceased officer’s father, Mr. Idoko, spoke briefly but poignantly. In an emotional yet composed voice, he stated, “It is the will of God. We cannot question the Almighty. Though the pain is deep, we submit to His will.” His remarks reflected profound grief tempered by faith and acceptance. Observers described the atmosphere surrounding the family as sober and reflective, marked by quiet expressions of solidarity from friends, colleagues, and community leaders.
