CIISM Honours DG, Energy Commission of Nigeria with Distinguished Fellowship and Leadership Excellence Award

Abuja, Nigeria — The Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management (CIISM) has conferred its prestigious Distinguished Fellow (DFCISM) and Leadership Excellence Award on Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, FNSE, CEng, MIMechE, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), in recognition of his visionary leadership and far-reaching impact on Nigeria’s energy sector.
The honour celebrates Dr. Abdullahi’s outstanding contributions to national energy planning, renewable energy transition, and the strategic execution of policies aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It affirms his role as a key architect in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready energy framework for Nigeria.
Speaking on the conferment of the award the Registrar of the Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management (CIISM), Dr. Peter Adelanke, described Dr. Abdullahi as “a model of strategic leadership whose work embodies the core values of the Institute intellectual rigor, policy relevance, and excellence in execution.
Dr. Adelanke further stated that Dr. Abdullahi’s leadership at the Energy Commission of Nigeria demonstrates the practical application of information intelligence and strategic management in governance, adding that “his contributions have strengthened institutional credibility, advanced Nigeria’s energy narrative, and set a benchmark for public-sector leadership in Africa.”
” He noted that the Distinguished Fellowship of CIISM is reserved for exceptional leaders whose influence transcends institutional boundaries and whose contributions meaningfully advance national development and enrich global strategic discourse.
Presenting the recognition, the President of CIISM, Dr. (Mrs.) Temile Uduogho, DFCISM, commended Dr. Abdullahi for his instrumental leadership in advancing the Renewed Hope Renewable Energy Transition Programmes and strengthening the effective implementation of the National Energy Policy and the National Energy Master Plan. She described his leadership as “strategic, reform-driven, and nationally impactful,” noting that his work continues to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth and long-term energy security.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, who was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, currently serves as the head of Nigeria’s apex energy planning institution, with the President also acting as Chairman of the ECN Governing Board. Under his stewardship, the Energy Commission of Nigeria has intensified its focus on energy diversification, clean energy adoption, and the development of a coherent national response to emerging global energy realities.
An accomplished engineer and policy strategist, Dr. Abdullahi holds a Doctorate degree from the University of Manchester and is a Chartered Engineer with internationally respected professional affiliations, including FNSE, MIMechE, and SPE. With over fourteen years of experience spanning Nigeria’s energy and oil sectors, he exemplifies the integration of technical expertise, academic excellence, and strategic public-sector leadership.
Since assuming office, Dr. Abdullahi has championed critical initiatives covering renewable energy expansion, green hydrogen development, energy efficiency frameworks, clean-technology research, smart energy data systems, and the promotion of local manufacturing of solar modules and lithium batteries—initiatives that collectively strengthen Nigeria’s energy sovereignty and industrial competitiveness.
On the global stage, his leadership has elevated Nigeria’s profile through strategic engagements at the G20, G8, United Nations General Assembly, and major climate platforms including COP28 and COP29, where he has consistently advocated for Africa’s priorities in climate justice, equitable energy access, and a just and inclusive energy transition.
As Nigeria navigates the complexities of energy security and sustainable development, the recognition of Dr. Abdullahi reinforces the importance of strategic management and information-driven governance in shaping the nation’s future.
