The petroleum engineering sector once again witnessed a celebration of excellence as Engr. Sunday Maxwell-Amgbaduba, a seasoned Petroleum Engineer, Asset Petrophysicist, and Geomechanist, was decorated with the Fellowship Award of the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum, Oil and Gas Engineers (NIPetGE) at its 2025 Annual Conference, held at the prestigious Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja.

The grand event, which brought together a constellation of leading industry experts, policy influencers, and top corporate executives, served as a reaffirmation of NIPetGE’s commitment to recognising distinction, inspiring professional growth, and sustaining ethical leadership within Nigeria’s oil and gas landscape.

With an illustrious career spanning over seventeen years, Engr. Sunday Maxwell-Amgbaduba stands as one of Nigeria’s foremost voices in formation evaluation, reservoir characterization, and production optimization. His journey through the oil and gas industry reflects both technical precision and leadership finesse.

Currently serving as the Asset Petrophysicist for the Field Management Team, East Nigeria, at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), he has consistently delivered results that strengthen operational efficiency, resource evaluation accuracy, and long-term field development strategies.

His work in Well, Reservoir, and Facility Management (WRFM) has reshaped decision-making processes and deepened technical collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Prior to joining SPDC, Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba made outstanding contributions at Renaissance, where he developed data-driven frameworks for reservoir modeling and petrophysical analysis—initiatives that improved production outcomes and asset reliability.

His technical proficiency, innovative mindset, and mentorship approach have positioned him as a bridge between academia and industry, fostering a new generation of technically sound, ethically grounded petroleum professionals.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba has built a formidable presence in academia as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Formation Evaluation and Petrophysics at the University of Port Harcourt Petroleum and Geoscience Centre of Excellence, where he has served since 2017.

He lectures, mentors, and guides postgraduate students—instilling in them the balance of scientific rigor, field applicability, and professional ethics that define the modern petroleum engineer. His academic engagements have become a model of how industry practitioners can influence knowledge transfer and national capacity development.

His educational background is equally impressive. He holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt, a Master of Engineering Management (MEM) in Mechanical Engineering from the Rivers State University, and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Petroleum Engineering.

A graduate of the Shell Intensive Training Programme (SITP) and Robert Gordon University, Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba embodies a continuous learning spirit that fuels his technical evolution and thought leadership in the oil and gas domain.

In addition to his new Fellowship honour, Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba recently received the 2025 Mr. Chikezie Nwosu Formation Evaluation Award from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International – Nigeria Council. The recognition underscores his enduring contribution to formation evaluation, data integration, and reservoir characterization—areas that are vital to efficient upstream operations and sustainable production.

These twin recognitions within the same year firmly establish him as one of the industry’s most accomplished and respected professionals, whose contributions transcend organizational boundaries and national recognition

Speaking with Newsway Energy Correspondents shortly after his conferment, Engr. Sunday Maxwell-Amgbaduba expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the National Institute of Petroleum, Oil and Gas Engineers for the honour bestowed upon him.

“This recognition is both humbling and inspiring. It is a reflection of many years of teamwork, learning, and shared commitment to excellence. I am profoundly grateful to the leadership of the Institute, particularly the President, Engr. Prisca Kanebi, whose visionary leadership continues to strengthen professional standards and capacity development within our sector,” he stated.

Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba further commended the Institute for its consistent drive toward raising the ethical and technical bar in Nigeria’s petroleum engineering profession.

“NIPOtGE has consistently proven itself as a credible institution of learning, regulation, and professional advancement. The Fellowship Award is not just a personal milestone; it is a reminder of the collective responsibility we have to advance indigenous capacity, embrace innovation, and maintain global standards of integrity and professionalism,” he remarked.

He dedicated the recognition to his colleagues, mentors, and the younger professionals he has guided, noting that every success story in the oil and gas sector is a product of shared expertise and collaborative spirit.

The Institute’s Enduring Legacy of Excellence

The NIPOtGE 2025 Annual Conference was a convergence of thought leadership and technical dialogue, featuring keynote presentations, industry panel sessions, and award recognitions designed to promote innovation across Nigeria’s petroleum value chain.

Under the dynamic leadership of Engr. Prisca Kanebi, the Institute has continued to expand its influence as a professional body fostering excellence, research collaboration, and ethical conduct among engineers. The recognition of outstanding professionals like Engr. Maxwell-Amgbaduba underscores NIPOtGE’s ongoing mission to celebrate merit, promote knowledge sharing, and enhance the nation’s technical capacity base.

The evening concluded with a standing ovation for the new Fellows, symbolizing the enduring truth that excellence, dedication, and integrity remain the pillars upon which every great engineer builds a legacy.
