In a landmark gathering of security, technology, and policy experts, Dr. Morgan Okocha, Director-General of the Forensic Science Service, called for the comprehensive integration of forensic tools in border security during the 17th International Forensic Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria. The summit, themed “Enhancing Border Security Through Forensic Science,” attracted high-profile participants from law enforcement agencies, government institutions, academia, and international security organizations.
Speaking to an audience of over 300 delegates at the prestigious National Merit Award House, Dr. Okocha emphasized that modern border threats require advanced investigative and screening technologies to effectively curb illicit activities, including trafficking, smuggling, and cross-border crime. “Forensic tools are no longer optional; they are critical instruments for national and regional security,” he asserted, highlighting the role of scientific evidence in strengthening legal and operational frameworks.
The event also hosted an induction and award ceremony recognizing exceptional contributions to forensic science, border management, and criminal justice, attended by senior government officials, security chiefs, and international observers, underscoring the summit’s global significance.
Under Dr. Okocha’s leadership, ISFSN has emerged as a premier institution driving capacity building, policy advocacy, and technological innovation in security and forensic studies across Nigeria and the West African sub-region. He concluded by urging policymakers to adopt a forensic-driven approach to border management, emphasizing investment in technology, inter-agency collaboration, and scientific expertise as essential tools for addressing evolving security challenges.
