ABUJA — June 12, 2025
As Nigeria marks its annual Democracy Day celebration, Hon. Victor Obuzor, the Member representing Ahoada-West and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has reaffirmed his commitment to people-centered governance and inclusive development. In a commemorative address released on Thursday , the lawmaker celebrated the enduring spirit of democracy while spotlighting legislative milestones and community development programs under his stewardship.
Hon. Obuzor, who has consistently positioned himself as a vocal advocate for grassroots transformation in the Niger Delta, described democracy as a living social contract that derives its legitimacy from active public service and measurable impact.
“Democracy is not merely a form of government—it is a moral obligation to uplift our people and ensure that every Nigerian has access to opportunity, dignity, and hope,” he said.
Hon. Victor Obuzor has extended heartfelt appreciation to the people of Ahoada-West and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency, acknowledging their unwavering support and partnership in the democratic journey. Reflecting on the progress achieved under his leadership in the National Assembly, he emphasized that the milestones recorded—ranging from legislative initiatives to grassroots empowerment—are a direct result of the collective will and shared aspirations of his constituents. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to transparent, inclusive, and people-centered governance, pledging to continue delivering impactful representation that addresses both immediate needs and long-term development goals.
Underscoring his achievements, the federal lawmaker highlighted his constituency-wide empowerment programs that have equipped hundreds of youths and women with vocational skills in fields including information and communication technology (ICT), tailoring, catering, barbing, makeup artistry, agriculture, and mechatronics. The training initiatives were complemented with financial grants and start-up tools, aimed at reducing unemployment and boosting micro-enterprise development in rural and semi-urban communities.
According to Obuzor, the programs reflect a deliberate strategy to drive economic inclusion from the bottom up, in line with national efforts to diversify the economy and promote entrepreneurship.
“We are building capacity across our wards—not just in words, but through tangible interventions that empower our people to be self-reliant and future-ready,” he said.
In the health sector, Hon. Obuzor reported that several primary healthcare centers have received strategic support, while mobile medical outreach campaigns were launched to address the urgent needs of underserved populations. These initiatives, he explained, were designed to bridge the healthcare access gap, especially in remote communities where infrastructure and personnel are limited.
In his legislative role, Hon. Obuzor has moved motions and sponsored bills with significant implications for the socio-economic development of Rivers State and the South-South region at large. Among these are proposals for the establishment of a Federal Institute of Vision and Optical Research in Erema and a College of Optometry in Odiokwu—institutions envisioned to foster academic excellence, clinical innovation, and professional training in vision science and optical health.
“These bills are strategic—they are designed to position our region as a hub for medical research and specialized education, while also creating jobs and improving access to advanced healthcare services,” the lawmaker emphasized.
Rep. Obuzor also detailed his advocacy efforts on the floor of the House, particularly in defense of the environmental and infrastructural rights of his constituents. He has called for urgent federal intervention in areas experiencing chronic power outages, championed motions on flood disaster management, and consistently engaged federal agencies on the ecological degradation facing parts of the Niger Delta.
“Whether it is the fight for electricity, clean water, or ecological justice, we have never been silent. The House of Representatives is not just a chamber of law—it is a platform to amplify the voices of the forgotten,” he stated.
As he rounded off his Democracy Day message, Hon. Obuzor thanked the people of Ahoada-West and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni for their enduring trust, resilience, and partnership. He called on all citizens to remain united, vigilant, and hopeful as the journey toward sustainable development continues.
“The future we seek is possible. But we must remain united in vision, deliberate in action, and unshaken in our faith in democracy,” he declared.
