Dr. Taofeek Thani Urges Muslim Ummah to Prioritize Waqaf

In a profound call to action, renowned Islamic scholar and humanitarian advocate, Dr. Taofeek Thani, has urged Nigerian Muslims to embrace and operationalize the institution of Waqf (Islamic endowment) as a strategic tool for sustainable development and collective progress of the Ummah and the nation at large.

The call was made during a high-level Islamic gathering held on Saturday, 17th May 2025, at the Women Development Centre, Abuja, with the theme: “Waqaf: A Blessing to the Muslim Ummah in This World.” The event drew dignitaries, Islamic scholars, professionals, and community leaders from across the country.

Dr. Thani emphasized that Waqaf is not merely an act of charity but a divinely ordained system rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), capable of transforming lives and communities when properly implemented.

He further encouraged participants to reflect deeply on the lectures delivered and to implement the principles of Waqf in their personal and professional lives. According to him, the event is not only a call to action but a reminder that every Muslim has a role to play in service to Allah and humanity.

“Let us leverage the teachings shared today and embody unwavering integrity, compassion, and cooperation. The strength of the Muslim Ummah lies in our unity, love for one another, and commitment to shared progress,” he added.

Speaking to Newsway Media Exclusive, he emphasized that Waqaf remains one of the most sustainable tools for alleviating poverty, empowering communities, and promoting Islamic civilization throughout history.

“This initiative reflects the prophetic tradition of promoting Waqf as a means of ensuring long-term benefits for the Ummah. It is not just about giving, but about strategically investing in the future of Islam and humanity,” Dr. Thani stated.

“Waqaf is a gift from Allah to the Ummah  a means of earning continuous reward (sadaqah jariyah) while addressing critical social and economic needs. Nigeria’s Muslim community must rise to institutionalize this powerful tool to promote education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare,” Dr. Thani stated.

He commended the organizers for promoting awareness about the Waqaf system and stressed its historical importance. Waqf, he noted, played a central role in the advancement of Islamic civilization — funding schools, mosques, hospitals, and supporting the poor, widows, and orphans.

“Waqaf is a mercy from Allah. It builds societies, sustains communities, and secures eternal rewards for the giver. It is Da’awah in action — service to Allah through service to humanity,” he added.

The program featured insightful lectures and scholarly presentations, including:

“Unleashing Perpetual Blessings: Understanding Waqf and Its Investment Forms” by Professor Adam Mohamad Abubakar

“A Guide for the Operators of Waqf Investments: Requirements, Issues, and Advice” by Professor Aliyu Dahiru Mohamad

“Introducing Muslim Professionals Da’awah” by Alhaji Saleh Adam Kwaru

These sessions explored the legal, spiritual, and economic dimensions of Waqaf, providing actionable steps for its establishment and management in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence.

Participants left the event energized and equipped to initiate community-based Waqf projects such as educational scholarships, health services, clean water programs, mosque maintenance, and youth development initiatives.

Dr. Thani concluded by emphasizing the values of integrity, compassion, and unity, urging Muslims to work collectively to build a just and loving society.

“Let us be reminded that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us the value of giving in the way of Allah. When we build for others, we build for ourselves in the Hereafter.”

The conference ended with a strong call for collaboration among Islamic institutions, professionals, and youth to revive the legacy of Waqf in contemporary Nigerian society.

Attendees were inspired to consider establishing personal or organizational Awqaf in areas such as education, healthcare, and community welfare, echoing the practices of early Muslims who built schools, hospitals, and mosques through Waqf.

The event concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and the continued growth of Islamic values in both public and private life. Participants left with renewed zeal to contribute to the Ummah and uphold the timeless principles of Islam through strategic Da'awah and sustainable charitable initiatives.

Waqaf is indeed a timeless blessing — a divine system that continues to serve the Muslim Ummah in this world while earning eternal rewards in the next.
