The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Mohammed Shehu, has advocated the urgent need for innovative and sustainable revenue generation strategies to address the increasing public service demands at all levels of government.

Speaking at the two-day training programme titled “_Optimizing Revenue Generation, Budgeting Process, and Good Governance”, in Abuja, today, Dr. Shehu emphasised that strengthening revenue generation was “no longer an option but a necessity for economic stability and sustainable development.”

“We must move beyond traditional revenue sources and explore new frontiers to boost fiscal sustainability,” he added.

The RMAFC boss reiterated the Commission’s constitutional mandate to advise the three tiers of government on fiscal efficiency and revenue enhancement.

The training programme was designed to equip government officials and stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve revenue mobilization, budgeting, and fiscal management.

The Chairman underscored the importance of strategic partnerships, optimal pricing strategies, and efficient fiscal management in enhancing revenue generation.

He noted that the programme would provide a platform for participants to engage with experts and explore best practices in revenue optimization.

Dr. Shehu, who urged all stakeholders to take full advantage of the training, emphasised that achieving fiscal sustainability requires proactive measures, collaboration, and a commitment to good governance.

At the end of the training, participants are expected to have a deeper understanding of revenue generation challenges and opportunities; acquire practical skills in revenue mobilization and management, develop strategic partnerships to enhance revenue generation and identify innovative solutions to address revenue shortfalls by leveraging areas of comparative advantage.

The Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has voiced its dissatisfaction regarding the disregard for the provisions of the nation’s Remuneration Act by state and local governments.

The chairman stated that the Remuneration Act sets forth specific guidelines and provisions regarding how public office-holders should be compensated. Disregarding these provisions by state and local governments raises questions about compliance with national laws.

RMAFC Boss highlighted the importance of equitable remuneration for public officials. Breaches of the Remuneration Act may lead to disparities in compensation, which can affect morale and performance within public service.

He expressed dissatisfaction while stressed the need for stricter enforcement mechanisms to ensure that all levels of government adhere to the established remuneration framework.

He Lamented that  Non-compliance can affect the effectiveness and integrity of public service, as it may lead to disillusionment among office-holders and impact their ability to serve the public effectively.

He called for greater accountability and oversight in how state and local governments manage their remuneration practices.

He said  adherence to the Remuneration Act will promote fairness and accountability in governance.
