ENCOUNMIUM FLOWS AS EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN BENUE SUBEB INDUCTED AS FELLOW ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA
The Executive Chairman Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has been officially inducted as a Fellow of the Astronomical Society of Nigeria (ASN).
The investiture took place on Wednesday during the 14th National Conference held for the first time in North Central Nigeria, at the Benue State University Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER), Makurdi.
Receiving the certificate, Dr. Adagba described the milestone as a significant achievement in her academic journey, pledging to engage in more research to contribute to the growth of the Astronomical Society. She appreciated the Executive Governor Benue State Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia for hosting the Conference and for his commitment to the development of Science in the State. Highlighting the Governor's dedication to uplifting the State and improving the well - being of the Benue People, particularly through the prompt payment of salaries and pensions.She also expressed gratitude to the National Executive for selecting Benue State as the host and thanked participants for their attendance.
Declaring the Conference open, the Chief Host and Vice Chancellor of Benue State University, Prof. Joe Iorapuu, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. S. T. Ubwa, highlighted the Society's role in national economic growth, technological advancement, and addressing global challenges. He urged participants to use the platform for thought-provoking discussions and meaningful collaborations.
The ASN President, Prof. A. A. Ubachukwu, represented by Prof. Jemima Ngozi Ogbo, noted that the Conference is an annual event designed to bring Nigerian Astronomers together to deliberate on global issues in space science and technology. She also appreciated Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for hosting the event.
Prof. Kingsley Okpara of ASN emphasized the importance of sensitizing School children to pursue careers in space science and astronomy. As part of this effort, society members visited selected Public Primary Schools, including Holy Family Primary and UBE Junior Secondary School Kanshio, St. Theresa's Primary School Wurukum,CAC Primary and UBE Junior Secondary School Wadata as well as St. Mary's Primary School North Bank.
The outreach aimed to inspire pupils to focus on science studies and consider futures as space and Astronomy Scientists.
Pupils Zion Oluwashina from St. Theresa's Primary School and Agatha Mfena from St. Mary's Primary School North Bank expressed their excitement about the cognitive demonstrations of space objects, stating that they were inspired to become Astronomers.
The event concluded with a cocktail reception for participants at the Government House Banquet Hall, Makurdi.
Earlier on, Dr. Adagba and the ASN Team, paid a courtesy call on the VC BSU Makurdi to intimate him and the University Management on the purpose of their Conference.
