FIRS Collaborates with Abuja Chamber of commerce to boost tax compliance rates

The Federal Inland Revenue Service has reiterated its commitment to enhancing tax compliance among Nigerian businesses through a strategic partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This collaboration was made known during the opening ceremony of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair themed: ‘Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance and Taxation’ held in Abuja on Monday.

Speaking at the event, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by Director of Tax Payers Services, Dr. Lovette Ononuga, lauded the ACCI for its ongoing efforts in promoting trade and collaboration among entrepreneurs.

“This event continues to highlight the strength and resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs,” Adedeji stated.


Additionally, we believe that collaboration is key to advancing tax advocacy and promoting voluntary compliance. So, our partnership with institutions such as the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry is crucial to raising crusade and awareness about the benefits of tax compliance in an economy.

Adding that,  working together, we help create a culture of compliance that not only strengthens the tax system but also contributes to the overall stability and predictability of the business environment,” she said.

Dr. Ononuga emphasised the importance of technology in simplifying tax compliance, noting, “Automation has simplified tax compliance, making it easier for businesses to thrive and pay taxes.”

She reiterated FIRS’s dedication to a customer-centric approach aimed at equipping tax officials with the necessary skills to serve the public effectively.

President of the ACCI, Emeka Obegolu, welcomed attendees and acknowledged the Trade Fair’s role as a pivotal platform for connecting businesses.

He remarked, “The AITF has established itself as a premier multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, offering domestic and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase new products and gain insights into evolving industry trends.”

The theme of this year’s fair, “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” resonated throughout the discussions, highlighting critical elements for economic growth. Obegolu explained, “Efficient transportation options help businesses overcome logistical challenges, streamline supply chains, and reduce operational costs,” he added.

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, Dele Oye, praised the partnership and underscored the necessity for effective policies that foster a conducive business environment.

He stated, “The significance of efficient transportation networks, accessible trade finance solutions, and fair taxation policies cannot be overstated as we seek to position Nigeria as a leader in regional and global commerce.”

The Fair, running over 12 days, features over 500 exhibitors showcasing more than 10,000 products and services. It serves not only as a trade hub but also as a venue for knowledge-sharing and networking among industry leaders and policymakers.

The President said ” Over the years, the AITF has established itself as a premier multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, growing both in scope and influence. It remains one of the largest trade platforms in Africa, offering domestic and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase new products, access emerging markets, build business relationships, and gain insights into evolving industry trends.

” As Nigeria’s capital, Abuja offers a unique strategic advantage for hosting this prestigious event. Its central location and accessibility from all parts of the country, combined with a safe and hospitable environment, make it ideal for accommodating both local and international participants.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s fair, “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Financing, and Taxation,” the president stressed that it addresses key drivers of business growth. Mobility has become a critical factor in today’s global economy, influencing trade, finance, and taxation. Efficient transportation options help businesses overcome logistical challenges, streamline supply chains, and reduce operational costs, all of which are essential for driving economic growth.

He said “The Fair is designed to serve as a hub for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and networking. By bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts, we aim to chart a path toward a more innovative, efficient, and sustainable future in mobility while also addressing critical issues such as access to financing and the complexities of taxation.”

According to him the 2024 edition of the AITF will feature over 500 exhibitors from various sectors, showcasing more than 10,000 products, solutions, and services to nearly 100,000 attendees over 12 days.

“This year’s Trade Fair is unique in that we are unveiling our inaugural National Policy Fellows, whose investiture will be conducted shortly. The National Policy Fellows Award recognizes outstanding individuals who have significant contributions to Business and Economic Development in diverse fields of endeavours including Academia, Business and Human Rights, Chamber Movement, Civil Society/Community Development, Improved Public Service Delivery, Industry/SME Development, and Legislative Policy.

Chief Obegolu revealed that the ACCI’s National Policy Fellowships underscore our commitment to fostering a dynamic and thriving economic environment in Nigeria.
